Changing over your wax melts

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

I still get a big smile on my face when I remember the day I asked my mum how she changed over her wax melts!

Why did I have a big smile on my face I hear you ask, well her response was ‘ I scrape it out with a spoon’. As you can imagine, I was mortified, bless her cotton socks. But then I realised, why would she have known? It was me who had introduced her to wax melts as I had given her some to sample before I started my business and I didn’t tell her as assumed she already knew.

Yes, I have always been taught to never assume. So with that said, I thought I should put together some helpful tips for you, so that changing over your wax melts can be easy as possible.

There are a few ways in which you can change over you wax melts. Each individual will find their own way which is easy for them.

1. Cotton pads

If you’ve already got a wax melt on and your tea-light is still lit, or alternately your electric burner is still plugged in and you want to change your wax melt over. Place 1/2 cotton pads into the top of the bowl. The pads will start to soak up the melted wax. Use as many pads as you need to make sure all wax has been soaked up and the bowl is clean ready for your next wax melt. You shouldn’t need any more than 3/4 pads per time. Put the soaked up pads in the bin.

2. Cotton wool balls

This is pretty much the same process as above, just with cotton wool balls rather than cotton pads. Both work in exactly the same way. Put in a few cotton wall balls to soak up the melted wax. Once all soaked up, give the bowl one final clean, then pop in a new wax melt. Put the soaked up cotton balls into the bin.

3. Let your wax solidify

If your burner hasn’t been used in a little while and the wax in the bowl has hardened and cooled down. Pop a lit tea-light under your burner and leave for around 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, you should be able to just push and slip your wax out in one whole piece and you can just put in in the bin. Give the bowl a quick wipe clean and then you can pop in a new wax melt.

4. Put it in the fridge or freezer

If you have an electric burner. The dish at the top comes off. Pop that dish in the fridge or freezer, only for a short amount of time though. The coldness will cause the wax to shrink and the wax can easily be taken out of the bowl in one whole piece.

Remember - do not scrape your wax out of the dish with anything sharp. This can cause damage to your lovely burners and could even break them.
